BibliOBSESSED | Emails to make you smarter

Happy week before Thanksgiving!
Here’s some good stuff I read (and watched and listened to) for you and hopefully some material for you to enjoy while prepping for (or avoiding) the festivities. 🤷‍♀️
#1 - A podcast about smartphones (and how to not let them take over your life).
#2 - An article with advice for new (and hopeful) business owners.
#3 - An article about how our work schedules are impacting our relationships and connections.
#4 - A book recommendation: Can’t Hurt Me.
Enjoy.

Smartphones (and how to not let them take over your life)
“Enjoy screens, not too much, mostly together.”
That’s the advice offered in this episode of Crazy/Genius, and it’s a good way to help avoid smartphone addiction.

Advice for new (and hopeful) business owners
This advice is not just for those in marketing businesses, but all new and hopeful business owners. I found myself reading and saying to myself, “Amen. Hallelujah.” If you’re new to business, just trust it. (That takes some faith, but I sure wish I had!)

Our work schedules are impacting our relationships and connections
My highlights:
  • The hours in which we work, rest, and socialize are becoming ever more desynchronized.
  • We have no time to see friends.
  • Holidays come in shifts, so we end up celebrating alone or in smaller and smaller groups.
  • Whereas we once shared the same temporal rhythms—five days on, two days off, federal holidays, thank-God-it’s-Fridays—our weeks are now shaped by the unpredictable dictates of our employers.
  • The inability to plan even a week into the future exacts a heavy toll.

A book recommendation
Very rarely do I find a book I find hard to put down. Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins has become one of those books for me (so far at least—at the time of this writing, which is late October, I’m about a third of the way through).
David overcame a lot of great odds to become … actually, I won’t do it justice. Here’s the blurb.
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare — poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world’s top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him “The Fittest (Real) Man in America.” In Can’t Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40% of our capabilities. Goggins calls this The 40% Rule, and his story illuminates a path that anyone can follow to push past pain, demolish fear, and reach their full potential.
Read it.
